  • The test tests how well you handle emergency care, use tools efficiently, and follow ethical medical practices.

USMLE Step 3 Eligibility

To qualify for the USMLE Step 3, candidates need to have finished or be close to finishing their medical education and meet certain criteria 

  • They should have completed USMLE Step 1 and USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge( CK) examinations. 

  •  They must hold a degree from an institution listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. 

  •  International Medical Graduates( IMGs) need to get instruments from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates( ECFMG), which verifies their qualifications. 

  •  Step 3 is generally taken by medical graduates who have completed at least one time of postgraduate training( Postgraduate Year 1 or PGY-1) 

  •  Aspirants must submit their operations through the Federation of State Medical Boards( FSMB) and meet any fresh licensing conditions specific to their state.

USMLE Step 3 Registration 

To appear for the USMLE Step 3, candidates must register through the Federation of State Medical Boards( FSMB). The entire process is online, including eligibility checks, figure payment, and test scheduling. Step 3 is the final part of the USMLE series and is required to apply for an unrestricted medical license in the United States. 

The Registration Process for USMLE Step 3 is similar to what you did for the first two steps. Listed below are the steps:

  •  Apply online through the sanctioned FSMB website 

  •  Choose a three-month eligibility window in which to take the test 

  •  Pay the test fee. USMLE Step 3 cost is INR  76,775( 925 USD) as of 2025 

  •  Once approved, download your Scheduling Permit 

  •  Schedule both testing days through Prometric 

  •  Complete both days of the test within the chosen eligibility window 

  •  Testing is available only at Prometric centers within the United States 

Documents Demanded for USMLE Step 3 

Before applying, ensure you have the necessary documents to meet the eligibility criteria. 

  •  MD or DO degree from a U.S. or Canadian medical academy accredited by LCME or COCA 

  • International Medical Graduates must have a valid ECFMG certificate, evidence of passing Step 1 and Step 2 CK 

  •  A valid government-issued print ID,  similar to a passport or a motorist's license 

  •  Access to your FSMB online account 

  •  Capability to download and publish the Scheduling Permit after blessing 

  •  Note: Both the ID and the Scheduling Permit must be carried to the test center on test days.

What are CCS cases in Step 3? 

Computer-based Case Simulations( CCS) are a major part of Day 2 of the USMLE Step 3 test. These are interactive case scripts where you must make clinical opinions just like a practicing doctor would in real time.

  •  You’ll get 13 CCS cases during Day 2 

  •  Each case runs for either 10 or 20 beats in real time

Step 3 Scheduling Permit 

Once your application for USMLE Step 3 enrollment is approved, you’ll receive a document called a Step 3 scheduling permit. This permit is like your ticket to book your test date and position. The Step 3 scheduling permit is a special document that tells you your eligibility period( a window of time,  generally three months, during which you can take the test) and your testing ID number. 

 

You need this permit to schedule your test days at a Prometric test center. Make sure to keep it safe and check all the details precisely. Once you have your USMLE Step 3 scheduling permit, you can go to the Prometric website and choose your test days within your eligibility period. 

USMLE Step 3 Passing Score
