Why USMLE Matters?

USMLE Exam requires you to have some skills and knowledge in a way that you are a good and safe doctor. USMLE Exam is compulsory for foreign medical school graduates and US home medical school graduates so that they are well equipped to they can obtain a residency program and practice later on in the US.

USMLE Exam Eligibility

USMLE Exam eligibility is open to most medical school graduates and physicians worldwide. Foreign medical graduates who are neither US nor Canadian and World Directory of Medical Schools are ineligible.

USMEL Step 1 and Step 2 exams eligibility

To be eligible to administer the USMEL Step 1 and Step 2 exams, you need to meet any of the following requirements:

• You must be an active student or a graduate of a US or Canadian medical school awarding the MD degree. The US or Canadian medical school must be known to be approved by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education or LCME, accrediting MD programs of the two countries, and also approved by the US Department of Education.

• You should be rightfully graduated or be enrolled in an American osteopathic medical college with a DO degree. The college must be accredited by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA) Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation (COCA), accrediting agency of USA osteopathic colleges, and approved by the US Department of Education.

• You are supposed to be studying at or have graduated from one of the World Directory of Medical schools, or WDOMS, but not the US and Canada. The school should also be in accordance with the requirements and policies of the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

USMLE Step 3 eligibility requirements

To take the USMLE Step 3, you should fulfill ALL of the following eligibility requirements:

• Hold an MD (or equivalent thereto, i.e., MBBS) and be from an LCME-accredited US or Canadian medical school.

• Or, hold a DO degree from an AOA-approved US medical school, or an MD (or equivalent thereto, i.e., MBBS) degree from a WDOMS-listed non-US and Canadian medical school, and be ECFMG Certified.

• Pass the USMLE Step 1 and Step 2 CK exams successfully.

USMLE Exam for Indian Students

You will definitely be qualified to sit for the USMLE Exam if you are an Indian medical graduate or an Indian medical student from an Indian medical college, provided that the college where you graduated or studied is registered and listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. You must apply through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) to be made eligible to apply for a US medical residency program. Your education is equated to US standards through ECFMG.

USMLE Registration Process Step by Step

Since you are a foreign student soon going to appear in the USMLE test, you should follow the instructions provided below.

Sign up on ECFMG's website.

Go to the site and click on the 'I want to apply for ECFMG Certification' tab and get a USMLE/ECFMG identification number. You will be redirected to another window in which there is a fresh application form where you need to fill in your details and submit the form. Your ECFMG ID and password (which can be changed) will be sent within two weeks.

Fill in the USMLE Step 1 application on the ECFMG site

Log in to your account and press the 'start a new application' link. Complete the form, properly inserting all your information, and pay the fee for the USMLE exam. Do not forget to also make your selection of the period of eligibility carefully. Understand that you are afforded a three-month time frame; you can choose when you take your exam.

Complete Form 183

When you purchase payment of the USMLE fee, you see that there is a link to Form 183 on the same window. Complete the form and get your Dean from your medical school to sign and stamp. Ensure the Dean's signature is the same as that reflected on ECFMG records. Do not forget to highlight this with your medical school office staff, as your form will be worthless in the event that signatures are not verified.

 Ensure that the envelope in which you mail the form is your Dean's official stationery and stamped by the Dean. Your medical college would mostly be aware of this process.

Wait for the scheduling permit

You will be sent your schedule permit through email by ECFMG within 2-3 weeks upon the submission of Form 183. It is a compulsory document and one you'll have to show while sitting for the test. Verify to ensure permitting and verify that the data therein is accurate.

Schedule your date at a Prometric Centre

You can then visit the Prometric website, the authorized and licensed test agency that administers all USMLE exams. Choose USMLE, your test location, and your preferred test date within your eligibility window period, and then reserve using the following information on the schedule permit.
