The current main campus spans more than 299 acres (121 hectares) in the contiguous area of West Philadelphia's University City section. In contrast, the older central part of the campus forms the University of Pennsylvania Campus Historic District. Penn's schools and most of its research institutes are on this campus.
The surrounding area includes numerous dining establishments, bars, a large high-end grocery store, and a cinema on the western edge of the campus.
