About the University
Established in 1866 following a charter granted by the Kansas State Legislature, the University has a rich history dating back to its origins in the aftermath of Kansas's statehood in 1861. With campuses in Lawrence and Edwards, and the University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC), it boasts a robust enrollment of 26,708 students as of Fall 2022. The Lawrence and Edwards campuses alone welcomed 23,872 students, while an additional 2,836 students pursued their education at KUMC. Supporting this academic community, the university employed 3,196 faculty members, including faculty administrators, librarians, and academic staff during the same period.
Athletically, the University of Kansas is a formidable presence in NCAA Division I sports under the banner of the Jayhawks, proudly representing the institution in the competitive arena of the Big 12 Conference. With a diverse offering of 16 varsity sports, alongside opportunities for club-level participation in ice hockey, rugby, and men's volleyball, the university fosters a culture of athleticism and sportsmanship among its student body.
