About the University
Established in 1894, the University of West of Scotland (UWS) has a storied history dating back to the late 19th century. Through mergers and name changes, it has evolved into a leading institution in the West of Scotland region. The university, resulting from the 2007 merger of the University of Paisley and Bell College, Hamilton, now boasts a rich heritage inherited from various predecessor institutions.
Today, UWS is known for its vocational undergraduate and postgraduate courses, catering to 16,105 students and supported by approximately 1300 staff across six schools of learning. The Crichton Campus in Dumfries, maintained in partnership with institutions like the University of Glasgow, further extends its regional presence.
Despite being classified as a new university, UWS's diverse history is evident, with roots tracing back to institutions like the Paisley School of Art and Craigie College of Education. Its academic offerings span across four schools, including business and creative industries, computing, engineering, and physical sciences, education and social sciences, and health and life sciences.
UWS's academic excellence is underscored by its impressive rankings, placing it among the top 3% of universities globally and within the top 200 universities under 50 years old. Notably, it has been recognized as the 4th most improved university in the UK. With a high satisfaction rate among alumni and top rankings in various disciplines, UWS continues to uphold its reputation for delivering quality education and fostering student success.
