About the University
Originally established as part of Birmingham's Municipal Technical School in the 19th century, University College Birmingham (UCB) has undergone significant transformations to become the esteemed institution it is today. Evolving from its roots in baking, catering, and domestic science, UCB transitioned to its current location in Summer Row in 1967, marking a new chapter in its history. Renamed and rebranded over the decades to reflect its expanding curriculum and global outlook, UCB has emerged as a renowned public university, earning full university status in 2012. Fondly referred to as the "College of Cakes" or simply "cakes and pies" colloquially, UCB maintains its legacy while embracing a diverse range of academic and vocational courses.
With a commitment to excellence in education and a strong emphasis on industry relevance, UCB attracts a diverse student body from around the world. Boasting an enrollment of approximately 7,500 students, including a substantial international cohort from over 60 countries, UCB offers a dynamic learning environment enriched by its multicultural community. Admissions are held biannually, providing opportunities for students to commence their academic journey in January or September. Moreover, UCB's strategic partnerships with leading employers ensure that students are equipped with the skills and knowledge demanded by the modern workforce, with notable alumni achieving salaries of up to 66,000 EUR.
