Imre Lakatos

Lakatos was a Hungarian philosopher of mathematics and science, best known for his influential theory on the fallibility of mathematics and his concept of “research programmes” in scientific methodology. He studied at the University of Debrecen in 1944 and later became one of the 20th century’s most cited figures in the philosophy of science.

Zsigmond Móricz

One of Hungary’s most celebrated novelists, Zsigmond Móricz was a pioneer of Social Realism in Hungarian literature. He studied at the University of Debrecen between 1899 and 1900. His works often portrayed the struggles of the Hungarian peasantry and continue to be an essential part of national literary heritage.

Magda Szabó

Magda Szabó is the most translated Hungarian author, with works published in over 42 countries. A graduate of the University of Debrecen in 1940, she was not only a novelist but also a poet, screenwriter, and children’s author. Her internationally acclaimed novel The Door remains a global literary classic.

Slomó Köves

Slomó Köves is a prominent Orthodox rabbi and the Chief Rabbi of EMIH (Unified Hungarian Jewish Congregation), affiliated with Chabad-Lubavitch. He earned his Doctor of Philosophy in history from the University of Debrecen in 2007 and has become a leading figure in Jewish life and interfaith dialogue in Hungary.

János Berecz

János Berecz was a Hungarian communist politician, writer, and journalist. Studying at the University of Debrecen in the early 1950s, he became a key ideologist in Hungary’s Socialist Workers' Party during the 1980s and played a significant role in shaping the country's political landscape during the communist era.

Sándor Zöld

Sándor Zöld studied medicine at the University of Debrecen in 1939 and went on to serve as Hungary’s Minister of the Interior between 1950 and 1951. A trained internist and politician, he held important roles during the post-war reorganization of Hungary's political and health systems.

Requirements for Study

Undergraduate Admission Requirements:

  • Transcripts:
    Applicants must submit official high school transcripts or equivalent academic records. These should reflect strong academic performance, especially in subjects related to the chosen field of study.

  • English Proficiency:
    International applicants are required to prove their English language proficiency through one of the following tests:

  • IELTS: Minimum score of 5.5–6.0

  • TOEFL iBT: Minimum score of 60–80

  • PTE Academic: Minimum score of 51

  • Entrance Exam:
    Certain programs, particularly in Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy, require applicants to pass an online or in-person entrance exam in subjects such as Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or Physics.

  • Standardized Tests (if applicable):
    While SAT/ACT scores are not mandatory for admission, submitting them can support your application for merit scholarships in selected programs.

  • Letters of Recommendation:
    Some undergraduate programs may ask for one or two academic recommendation letters from teachers or school counselors.

  • Statement of Purpose/Motivation Letter:
    Applicants must submit a brief motivation letter outlining their academic interests, reasons for choosing the University of Debrecen, and future goals.

  • CV/Resume (optional):
    Some departments recommend including a basic CV highlighting academic achievements, extracurriculars, and language proficiency.

  • Portfolio (for specific programs):

  • Resume/CV:
    A professional CV highlighting education, research experience, internships, certifications, and relevant skills must be submitted with the application.

  • Portfolio (for specific programs):
    Applicants for programs in design, visual arts, or media studies may be required to upload a portfolio or project samples.

  • Interview (if applicable):
    Select master’s and doctoral programs may require an online or in-person interview to assess academic readiness and motivation.
