About the University
Established in 1850 as the University of Deseret by the General Assembly of the provisional State of Deseret, the institution, now known as the University of Utah, stands as Utah's oldest higher education establishment. Renamed in 1892, it relocated to its present site in 1900. With a robust enrollment of 34,705 students in Fall 2022, it ranks as the state's second-largest public university, offering graduate programs such as the S.J. Quinney College of Law and Utah's premier medical school. Noteworthy for its research prowess, the university garnered $552 million in research funding in 2018, placing it 45th nationwide and earning its membership in the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU).
Complementing its academic achievements, the University of Utah boasts a comprehensive healthcare system comprising four hospitals, including the renowned University of Utah Hospital and Huntsman Cancer Institute. Alongside twelve community clinics and specialty centers like the Moran Eye Center, the university delivers exceptional medical care. On the athletic front, the university's teams, known as the Utes, actively compete in NCAA Division I athletics, notably in the Pac-12 Conference for most sports.
