About the University
Rutgers University, colloquially known as RU, stands as a distinguished public research institution with a rich history dating back to its founding in 1766 as Queen's College. Originally affiliated with the Dutch Reformed Church, it holds the esteemed position as the eighth-oldest college in the United States. Renamed Rutgers College in 1825 to honor Colonel Henry Rutgers, whose generous contribution stabilized the institution's finances during a critical juncture, the university has undergone significant transformations over the centuries.
Designated as The State University of New Jersey in 1945 and 1956 by legislative acts, Rutgers transitioned from a private liberal arts college to a coeducational public research powerhouse. Today, it comprises four campuses spread across the state: Rutgers University–New Brunswick, Rutgers University–Newark, Rutgers University–Camden, and Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences, along with additional facilities including oceanographic research centers along the Jersey Shore.
As a land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant university, Rutgers boasts an expansive academic portfolio delivered by a diverse faculty of 9,000 members across 175 academic departments. Its student body comprises over 45,000 undergraduate students and more than 20,000 graduate and professional students, making it the largest university in New Jersey.
