About the University
Central Michigan University (CMU) traces its origins back to 1892 when it was established as the Central Michigan Normal School and Business Institute. Initially a private institution, it transitioned into a state university under the governance of the Michigan State Board of Education in 1895 and was renamed Central State Normal School. Over the years, CMU evolved into a comprehensive research university, achieving university status in 1959 and adopting its current name. Under the leadership of its 6th president, Judson W. Foust, CMU solidified its position as a prominent educational institution in Michigan.
Today, CMU stands as one of Michigan's eight esteemed research universities, distinguished by its classification among "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity." With over 15,000 students on its Mount Pleasant campus, CMU offers a diverse array of academic programs spanning undergraduate, masters, specialist, and doctoral levels. From entrepreneurship to music, psychology to engineering, CMU's curriculum encompasses 200 programs, including ABET accredited offerings in mechanical, electrical, computer, and environmental engineering through its School of Engineering and Technology. Notably, the establishment of the College of Medicine in 2013 expanded CMU's academic reach, further enriching its educational landscape.
