Birmingham City University, formerly known as The City of Birmingham Polytechnic, was founded in 1971 by merging five colleges. Those five colleges were Birmingham College of Art, Birmingham School of Music, Birmingham College of Commerce, South Birmingham Technical College, and North Birmingham Technical College.

According to the QS World Rankings 2024, Birmingham City University has a world ranking between #1001-1200. With an acceptance rate of around 53%, Birmingham City University is moderately selective for admissions of international students.
